After receiving his MD in internal medicine and PhD in cardiology and experimental medicine from the First Pavlov State Medical University in St. Petersburg, Russia, he became an associate professor of medicine at the New York Medical College, Valhalla in 2002. Dr. Blagosklonny frowns on the description of aging as a disease and disagrees with the definition of aging as a functional decline caused by the accumulation of random molecular damage that cannot be prevented. Hyperfunction theory describes aging as a continuation of growth driven by signaling pathways. TOR (Target of Rapamycin) can be used to extend a healthy life span in humans. There are several potential anti-aging drugs in clinical use and combining drugs and modalities, selecting doses and schedules will avail the maximal lifespan extension.
